Half the World and Half a War by Joe AbercrombieSeptember 29, 2015 at 11:31 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment
Last week, Strange Horizons published my combined review of the second and third books in Joe Abercrombie’s Shattered Sea trilogy.
If you like my reviews, then you probably like Strange Horizons reviews as well. Not just because a few of them are written by me, but because my approach to reviewing is very similar to what we might call the house style at Strange Horizons. That’s not a coincidence, either. As a quick jaunt through this site’s archives will quickly show, I spent years writing bare bones capsule reviews. Reading Strange Horizons reviews, and the blogs of frequent SH reviewers like Abigail Nussbaum and Adam Roberts, was a direct influence on how I write today.
I mention this now because Strange Horizons isn’t supported by subscriptions or advertisements. Each year they do a fund drive to pay for next years content. The extremely hard-working staff are, sadly, not paid–the money goes to the contributing writers. This year’s fund drive is well under way, so if you read Strange Horizons but haven’t donated, I hope you’ll consider it.
